Tooth Replacement Options Your Dentist May Recommend

Tooth loss is a common problem that comes with age or even injuries and other dental problems. However, losing a tooth doesn’t have to spell doom for your teeth. Teeth replacement in dentistry has enabled many patients to restore their appearance and even functionality with different tooth replacement treatments. The following are some of the best tooth replacement options that your dentist might recommend if you happen to lose a tooth.

Dental implant

A dental implant replaces your entire tooth structure with artificial material. It is designed to mimic a natural tooth in appearance and functionality. A screw-like implant is inserted deep inside the jawbone in place of the roots to support a crown.

Removable dentures

Dentures are a non-invasive tooth replacement option which can be used instead of an implant. A denture can either be complete or partial. Complete dentures are worn to cover the whole tooth arch while a partial denture is worn to cover one or just a few missing teeth. Dentures are removable since they are not fixed into the jawbone or gums. They are a cheaper version of dental implants but lack the functionality of implants since you have to remove them when eating. However, they assist with speech and physical appearance.

Crown bridges

If you have a missing tooth, the two adjacent teeth can be used to support an artificial tooth/crown to replace the missing tooth/teeth. This can be done in two ways; implant-supported fixed bridge and a tooth-supported fixed bridge.  An implant-supported fixed bridge can help replace a number of teeth in a dental arch. The implant-supported fixed bridge is designed in such a way that instead of fixing implants on all the missing teeth, only a few implants are fixed and they are used to bridge the other teeth. A tooth-supported fixed bridge, on the other hand, uses adjacent teeth to support a missing tooth. The adjacent teeth are fitted with crowns which are then attached to the bridged missing tooth.

Resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis

Mostly applied to the front teeth which are not exposed to so much tension from chewing, resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis, simply known as the resin-bonded bridge relies on composite resin cement material to bond to the abutment/adjacent teeth. The replacement tooth is designed with wing-like extensions, made from the composite cement. The ‘wings’ are then fixed to the adjacent teeth to support the replaced tooth.

Flipper

A flipper is a temporary partial denture which is often followed up by any of the above-mentioned replacement options. It is only meant to fill any gaps from missing teeth so you can smile and speak normally for a while before a more permanent replacement option is installed. It is more lightweight and easily removable.
